Foster-based. All-volunteer. Serving Cumberland, Hoke & Moore counties, NC.

Foster-Based Rescue.

TARA Rescue is a foster-based, all-volunteer animal 501(c)3 rescue serving Cumberland, Hoke, and Moore counties in North Carolina.

All of our dogs and cats stay in foster homes where they get structure, stability, and someone cheering them on. We get to know their quirks and help them settle into real life—so when they meet you, it’s the start of something that actually lasts. We match pets and families carefully—for the kind of happily-ever-after that works in the real world, not just the cute adoption photo.

100% volunteer-run. From the cat cleaner to the director, every hour is given from the heart.

How You Can Help

We don’t have a shelter building—we have living rooms, spare bedrooms, and volunteers who open their homes. That means every new foster, donor, and volunteer directly creates space for the next animal in need.

Adopt

Ready for a new family member? Our pets are already living in foster homes, learning house manners, crate skills, and what it means to be loved. We’ll guide you through the process and send you home with a detailed post-adoption FAQ so nothing gets lost in the excitement.

Foster

Foster homes are the backbone of TARA. You provide a safe place; we provide medical care, support, and clear expectations. Short-term, long-term, puppies, adults, dogs, or cats—we’ll help you find the right fit.

Donate & Volunteer

No paid staff means your donations go straight to vet care and supplies. Can’t foster right now? Help with events, transport, laundry, fundraising, or admin work from your couch.

Our Approach to Rescue

At TARA Rescue, we believe in honest, compassionate rescue. That means we celebrate the wins and tell the truth about the hard parts. Not every dog is perfect, and not every cat is straightforward (we adopt out more cats than dogs, so we know what we’re talking about), and not every match is instant. That’s okay. We’re here to set both animals and humans up for success.

  • Foster-based: every animal stays in a home or a home-style care environment. They get daily love, play, structure, and the kind of one-on-one attention that helps us understand their needs and match them well.
  • We don’t rush animals—they stay in care until they’re ready for their next chapter.
  • Conversation-based adoptions focused on real-life fit, not checkboxes.
  • Detailed post-adoption FAQ for the “I know you told me this, but I forgot” moments.

We cheer you on, answer your questions, and help you set healthy boundaries for your new pet—think of us as your cat’s favorite teacher: kind, clear, and not afraid to say, “Let’s try that again.”
