Post Adoption Info
Congratulations on Your New Best Friend!
Welcome to the TARA Rescue Family! We know adoption day is exciting (and a little overwhelming), so we’ve put everything you need to know in one place to ensure your transition with your new pet is as smooth as possible.
Your Adoption Packet
When you signed your adoption contract, your adoption packet was emailed to you. This email contains:
- Microchip Information: Your pet’s microchip is already registered to you. To add additional contacts (such as family members or alternate phone numbers), follow the instructions provided. You have 30 days to make updates or change your pet’s name.
- Electronic Contract: A copy of the adoption contract you signed.
- Medical Records: A copy of your pet’s medical summary, including details of recent care and vaccinations.
Scheduling Your First Vet Visit
- Puppies & Kittens: Schedule a vet visit within the next week to review their medical information and discuss next steps for vaccines and care.
- Adult Dogs & Cats: Schedule a vet visit within the next few weeks to establish care and address any health questions.
Rabies Vaccination
- If your pet is 16 weeks or older, you were given an envelope containing their rabies certificate. This vaccine is required by law and must be kept up to date.
- If your pet is not old enough for the rabies vaccine, you were provided a voucher to cover the cost of the vaccine once they are old enough.
Puppy & Kitten Vaccines
Puppies and kittens require a series of at least three vaccines to protect against life-threatening diseases.
- It’s your responsibility to ensure they complete this vaccine series with your veterinarian.
- Failure to complete the series may leave your pet vulnerable to potentially fatal viruses like parvo or distemper.
- If you need help finding a veterinarian, please contact us, and we’ll be happy to recommend one in your area.
Preventative Care
- Flea/Tick/Heartworm Prevention: Your pet is current on their flea, tick, and heartworm preventative, typically Advantage Multi, as listed in their medical summary.
- Ongoing Care:
- Heartworm medication should be purchased from your veterinarian and given monthly.
- Flea and tick medicine can be purchased either combined with heartworm preventative or separately, and should also be given monthly.
Spay & Neuter Information
All TARA animals are spayed or neutered before adoption. Some pets may not have a separate certificate of sterilization in their packet, but the procedure is noted in their medical records.
Settling In
- Give Them Time: It’s normal for pets to feel shy, scared, or confused for the first few days. Let them decompress, and don’t rush introductions to other pets.
- Safe Space: Create a quiet area where they can rest and feel secure.
- Positive Reinforcement: Praise and reward them as they adjust to their new home.
When to Call Us
- Behavioral Concerns: We’re here to guide you if challenges arise, but keep in mind that some animals will take time to learn their new home and routine.
- Medical Questions: If you notice something concerning within the first 7 days, please contact us or your vet immediately.
