Adopt from TARA Rescue

Thank you for choosing to adopt. Every dog and cat in our care is living in a foster home, learning what it means to be loved and part of a family. Our goal is to match you with a companion whose needs and personality fit your home and lifestyle.

Adoption Fees & What’s Included

Adoption fees help cover a portion of each animal’s veterinary care and supplies. TARA does not profit from adoptions — your fee goes right back into saving the next life.

Dogs & Puppies – $200

Dog and puppy adoptions include:

  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Rabies vaccination (as age appropriate) or a rabies voucher if too young at adoption
  • Distemper/Parvo vaccinations (DHPP series as age appropriate)
  • Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination
  • Age-appropriate deworming
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Heartworm prevention (as age appropriate)
  • Microchip and registration/transfer

Cats & Kittens – $135

Cat and kitten adoptions include:

  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Rabies vaccination (as age appropriate) or a rabies voucher if too young at adoption
  • FVRCP (core feline) vaccinations as age appropriate
  • Age-appropriate deworming
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Microchip and registration/transfer

All TARA cats are adopted as indoor-only companions. We also have a strict no-declaw policy.

Occasionally, we may adjust adoption fees for seniors or bonded pairs on a case-by-case basis. Any such changes are discussed directly with approved adopters.

How Our Adoption Process Works

We try to keep the process friendly and efficient while making sure each animal and family are a good fit for one another. Yes, we do same-day adoptions when everything lines up — application, interview, and a solid match.

  1. Submit an application. Fill out our dog or cat adoption application with as much detail as possible. The more we know, the better we can match you with the right animal.
  2. Application review & interview. A TARA volunteer will review your application and reach out for a friendly adoption interview. We’ll talk about your home, experience, expectations, and the animal you’re interested in. When applicable, we may verify vet care history or landlord permission.
  3. Meet-and-greet. We’ll arrange a time for you to meet the animal — often at one of our PetSmart events or by appointment with the foster. For dog adoptions, we strongly encourage bringing resident dogs for a meet-and-greet when possible.
  4. Final approval & adoption day. If everyone (including the animal) feels like it’s a good match, we’ll finalize the adoption. You’ll review and sign our adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and go over the animal’s medical records and any known behavior notes.
  5. Going home & settling in. The adjustment period can take time — think in terms of weeks and months, not hours. We’re here to answer questions and support you as your new family member settles in.

Please note: TARA Rescue reserves the right to refuse any adoption at any time, for any reason. Our responsibility is to the animal’s safety and well-being, and to the long-term happiness of both the pet and the family.

Our Expectations for Adopters

Adoption is a lifelong commitment. We’ll always be honest about what we know, and we ask adopters to do the same. Together, we give each animal the best chance at a safe, happy life.

Home & lifestyle expectations

  • All adopted animals are expected to be kept current on core vaccinations and preventatives.
  • Cats and kittens are adopted as indoor-only pets.
  • We have a strict no-declaw policy for cats.
  • For dogs, fenced yards are preferred and required for some dogs based on age, energy, or history.
  • Dogs may not live as outdoor-only pets or be left tied/chained outside; brief, supervised potty breaks on a tie-out are acceptable.
  • We expect adopters to provide appropriate training, structure, and enrichment.

Our commitment & your responsibility

We will always give the most transparent information we have about each animal’s medical history, temperament, and background. Many of our dogs and cats have lived with fosters who can share detailed notes about their behavior in a home.

Once ownership is transferred, future medical and training decisions and costs become the responsibility of the adopter. We remain available for questions and support, but we cannot guarantee future health, behavior, or expenses.

Adjustment Period & Lifetime Support

3–3–3 Many adopted pets follow a “3–3–3” pattern: roughly 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to start to understand the routine, and 3 months to truly settle in.
90 Days Our contract includes a 90-day check-in period where we may reach out to see how things are going and offer support if needed.

We remain committed to supporting our animals as best we can for their natural life. If an adopter can no longer care for their pet, we have policies in place to either reclaim or assist in rehoming the animal at our discretion.

Due to safety and welfare concerns, we cannot accept back cats who have been declawed after adoption or animals who are human-aggressive. In those cases, we will work with adopters to explore safe, humane options whenever possible.

Adoption FAQ

Do you do same-day adoptions?

Yes, we do same-day adoptions when everything is in place: a completed application, adoption interview, and a good match for both the animal and the family. Same-day adoption is never guaranteed, but it is absolutely possible.

Can I adopt if I don’t live in your county?

Yes. We regularly adopt to homes outside Hoke, Cumberland, and Moore Counties, as long as we feel it’s a good fit and we can complete the process responsibly.

Do you accept out-of-state adoptions?

Yes, in some cases. Out-of-state adoptions are considered carefully and may require additional steps to ensure safety, legal compliance, and a solid support plan.

Can you hold an animal for me?

Generally, no. We do not place holds on animals. In rare cases, we may hold an animal for a short time for an already-approved adopter with a scheduled meet-and-greet.

Are your animals in a shelter building?

No. TARA is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live in private homes, not in a public shelter facility. This helps us learn who they really are in day-to-day life.

Can I return an adopted animal?

If you are struggling with your new pet, please reach out. We want to help. When an adopter can no longer care for their animal, we may reclaim or assist in rehoming the animal at our discretion, based on space, safety, and individual needs. We cannot accept cats that have been declawed after adoption or animals who are human-aggressive, but we will work with you to find humane options whenever possible.

Still have questions? Reach out through our contact page, or message us on social media. We’re happy to talk through the process and help you decide if a particular animal is the right fit for your home.
