Foster-based. All-volunteer. Serving Cumberland, Hoke & Moore counties, NC.

Volunteer with TARA Rescue

TARA is 100% volunteer-run. Every adoption, transport, fundraiser, and life saved happens because people like you show up and help.

We have opportunities for all comfort levels — from hands-on with animals to behind-the-scenes support.

Ways You Can Help

You don’t have to foster or adopt to make a difference. Whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, we can put your skills — and your heart — to work.

Event Volunteers

Adoption events, outreach, and special projects.

  • Help set up and break down adoption events
  • Talk with potential adopters and answer basic questions
  • Walk dogs, refresh water, and tidy kennels at events
  • Assist with holiday or fundraising events as needed

Dog & Cat Care Support

Hands-on help without being a full-time foster.

  • Assist fosters at events with handling and leash walks
  • Help transport animals to and from vet appointments
  • Offer short-term “babysitting” for foster animals when needed

Transport & Errands

For people who like to drive and get things done.

  • Pick up supplies and deliver to fosters or events
  • Help with shelter pulls and transfers
  • Occasional longer-distance transport as you’re able

Behind-the-Scenes Help

If you love organizing, planning, or computers.

  • Application processing and reference calls
  • Data entry and record-keeping
  • Social media support, photos, and write-ups
  • Fundraising and outreach projects

What We Provide & What We Ask

We know your time is valuable. Our goal is to give you clear communication, realistic expectations, and support while you help us help the animals.

What We Provide

  • Training or guidance for your chosen volunteer role
  • Clear points of contact (dog coordinator, cat coordinator, or team lead)
  • Supplies for events and animal care activities
  • Support if situations become stressful or overwhelming
  • A team of people who “get it” when rescue life is hard

What We Ask of Volunteers

  • Be old enough and responsible enough to actually help in your chosen role
  • Anyone under 16 must have a parent or legal guardian volunteering with them
  • Sign required liability waivers before volunteering
  • Reliable communication and follow-through when you sign up for a shift
  • Kindness and respect toward adopters, fellow volunteers, and the public
  • Willingness to follow TARA policies and coordinator direction
  • Safety-first handling of animals and honest reporting of any concerns
  • Openness to learning — every animal and every day can be different

Safety & Handling Guidelines

Safety comes first — for our animals, volunteers, and the public. We’ll go over these guidelines during training, but here are a few important points up front.

Handling & Equipment

  • No retractable leashes. We do not use them at any time.
  • Some animals are required to be in a harness; always follow coordinator instructions.
  • Puppies may not be on the ground until they are at least one week past their 4th shot.
  • Follow all posted handling rules at events and listen to the foster or coordinator for that animal.

What to Wear & Expect

  • Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended for all events and animal handling.
  • Expect to get a little hairy, drooled on, or dirty — it’s part of the job.
  • If you ever feel unsafe or unsure, step back and get a coordinator immediately.

Volunteer FAQ

How much time do I need to commit?

We have opportunities for a wide range of schedules. Some volunteers help once or twice a month at events, while others are involved weekly. We’ll work with you to find a level of involvement that fits your life.

Do I need prior animal experience?

Not necessarily. Some roles do require experience and confidence handling animals, but there are also plenty of jobs for people who are new to rescue or prefer behind-the-scenes work.

Can I volunteer if I can’t foster?

Absolutely. Fostering is just one way to help. Event support, transports, admin help, and fundraising are all critical to keeping TARA running.

Do you accept court-ordered community service?

In many cases, yes. We may accept court-ordered community service for non-violent, non-drug-related offenses. These are reviewed on a case-by-case basis as part of the application process.

Are there age requirements?

Volunteers must be old enough and responsible enough to safely help in their chosen role. Anyone under 16 must have a parent or legal guardian volunteering with them at all times.

Can groups volunteer together?

In many cases, yes. We may have opportunities for service groups, clubs, or workplaces to help with events or special projects. Contact us to discuss what you have in mind.

Can I post photos from events on social media?

Yes, please tag us when you share photos from TARA events. If children’s faces are visible, either cover them or ask a parent’s permission before posting. Always follow coordinator guidance about which animals can be photographed.

I’m not sure where I fit. Should I still apply?

Yes, please. Tell us what you’re good at (or what you enjoy), and we’ll help you find a role that makes sense. Rescue needs all kinds of skills, not just “dog whisperers.”

Still unsure or need clarification? Reach out through our contact page and we’ll be happy to talk it through with you.
